DUNGANNON SWIFTS 0-1 INSTITUTE
12 April 2008
INSTITUTE moved off the bottom of the Irish League after this hard-earned win over mid-table opposition. It was a fairly low-key affair but Institute showed more desire and hunger and deserved the win courtesy of Ryan McCreadie's second-half header.
Institute impressed in the early exchanges but without making their opportunities count. Phillip Lowry had the best chance of the half when he took a pass from Ryan McCreadie in the second minute. In the clear, bearing down on Swifts keeper Dwayne Nelson, a goal looked certain but a terrible shot sent the ball wide of the post. McCreadie had a scoring chance of his own on 16 minutes but his close range snapshot was well saved by Nelson.
Swifts improved as the game progressed with Austin Friel bring the best out of Institute goalkeeper Alan Ryan on 28 minutes after a pass from JP Gallagher down the left wing exposed the visiting defence. Friel went close five minutes later when a foul by David Ogilby on Shea McGerrigan was punished by a yellow card and a 25-yard free-kick. Dead-ball expert Friel guided his effort expertly around the wall but just over the top left hand corner of Alan Ryan's net.
Institute started the second period on top and after McCreadie fired wide, he more than made amends with a goal on 56 minutes with a bullet header into the back of the onion bag. Ths assist coming from Ryan Semples corner. A long free from Gallagher was met inside the box by centre-half John Curran but while his glancing effort was too good for the keeper, it dropped just beyond the right post.
Swifts had plenty of play in the final minutes but without finding the equaliser. Stute are off the bottom after Limavady and Armagh lost.
Institute's manager John Gregg is convinced his dream of avoiding a bottom two finish can be realised. "Sitting at the foot of the table hurts and, when you are feeling that bot of pain, you can come to places like Dungannon and get results like we've done today" said Gregg. "A lot of people have written us off. We don't feel that way."
No doubt, a priceless 3 points!
